What Is The Difference Between A Policy and A Procedure in ISO 9001?

They might sound similar, but in the context of ISO 9001, a policy and a procedure are very different! In this blog, the Mark1 team will explain the key contrasts between policies and procedures, and answer some common questions about how both will impact your journey towards ISO 9001 certification.

What Is A Policy?

A policy is a top-level document, developed and confirmed by the management of your organisation, that defines an overall aim and direction. It must be specific to the individual organisation, compliant with ISO requirements, promote continual improvement, be regularly reviewed and updated, and be available to everyone within your organisation. In the simplest terms, a policy is a commitment to meet a requirement of the ISO standard you are seeking to become certified in, outlining an objective that you are trying to achieve.

What Is A Procedure?

On the other hand, a procedure does not necessarily have to be documented. Whilst a policy is a recognised and active intention, a procedure is a low-level and reproducible set of steps to achieve an outcome required in the running of your organisation. For example, purchasing is a procedure, whilst your policy statement is the top-level document of your quality management system.
